"From an architectural point of view, the solution presented for the Casa Museu Guerra Junqueiro dialectically consecrates two fundamental principles which are inevitably pondered in the conservation operations of historically significant buildings: a more or less charismatic addition to the physical context of the preexisting buildings, and a diffuse design, conducted as a recomposition of the preexisting environment.
Thus, while accepting the historical contradictions of the building, it is suggested, naturally from a subjective reading, the necessary depurations to the distributive and morphological organization of the interventions, selectively exalting routes, spaces or more significant architectural elements, with the parallel introduction of new structures capable of responding to the new programme requirements.
The application of these generic concepts finds its most expressive practical consequence in the proposals for the ends of the intervention area - to the north, through a solution of continuity, adding a new architectural element to the preexistence; to the south, by the implementation of a small autonomous structure.
In the first case, the intention is to establish the conclusion of the museum's northern side, resolving the vagueness of its façade, while, in accordance with the programme, it aims to create conditions for the installation of its services, given the impossibility of integrating them in the current structure of the building.
The construction adopted for the southern end of the garden, fully occupied by the educational sector, aims, in addition to meeting the terms of the programme, to promote the closure of the upper platform of the garden, in an open but complex dialogue with the wall and trees, highlighting, in any case, through the proposed language, a healthy reciprocal relationship of proximity with the Casa Museu, already understood here with the respective addition."
