Bernardo Ferrão was born on June 19, 1945 in Porto, and died on September 19, 2004.
He studied architecture at the Porto School of Fine Arts (ESBAP), where he would work as a teacher,
first as an Assistant and afterwards as an Associate Professor. Following the creation of the Faculty
of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) he became an Associate Professor on a full-time
basis.
He was the author of the book Project and Urban Transformation in Porto during the age of the
Almadas - 1758-1813: a contribution to the study of the Pombaline city (Edições da F.A.U.P., Porto,
1989) and the co-author of both the monograph on Fernando Távora (Editorial Blau, Lisbon, 1993),
and the publication Guimarães / World Heritage City - A Strategic Object (C.M.G/G.T.L. - 1998).
Within the scope of single-family and collective housing and urban facilities, he designed, among
others, single-family houses in Vila-das-Aves, Santo Tirso (1977-78), Madalena, V.N. de Gaia (1980-
82), Praia da Granja, V.N. de Gaia (1987 -88), Vila-das-Aves, Santo Tirso (1988-90), Leça da Palmeira,
Matosinhos (1996-1997), Boa Nova, Matosinhos (1996-99), as well as the Cooperativa Habitovar
Row Houses (8+ 13 dwellings), in Ovar (1977-78), the INH Social Housing Blocks (2 blocks * 32
dwellings), in Lagoa, Esposende (1992-94), a Housing Complex (5 dwellings) in Nevogilde, Porto
(1993- 98), a Housing Complex between D. João IV avenue and the C+S School (34 buildings) in
Guimarães and the Institute of Systems and Computer Engineering - (INESC) for the University of
Aveiro (1992-93).
He participated in numerous collective exhibitions of drawings and/or architecture, namely the
Contemporary Portuguese Architecture - 60's / 80's (Porto and Lisbon, 1991), and won several prizes
and honorable mentions in architectural competitions, as was the case of the Urban Plan for the
Riverside of the City of Gaia (1986), and the INH Prize - 1999 (Private Promotion) showcased at the
Architecture Prize Exhibition (Lisbon, O.A., 2001). He obtained the 1st place in the competition for
the Refurbishment of Casa dos Navarros de Andrade to house the Municipal Archive Alfredo
Pimenta, in Guimarães (1998), and was invited by Porto 2001 S.A. - European Capital of Culture for
the development of the Enhancement Program of Porto's Downtown Area / Intervention Area West
B, and for the Romantic Routes competition. Both works were considered of "Recognized Merit” and
later exhibited at the Municipal Theatre Rivoli (Porto, 2000).
