Sérgio Fernandez

Sérgio Leopoldo Fernandez Santos was born in Porto in 1937.

He studied Architecture at the Porto School of Fine Arts, [ESBAP]. As a student, he participated in the CIAM (International Congress of Modern Architecture), in Otterloo, in 1959.

After finishing university, he began teaching and held other important positions first at the ESBAP and later at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto. He was a member of the Executive Board and teaching Standards Committee of the Architecture course at the ESBAP (1976-1983); he was the Vice-Chairman of the Governing Board (1988-1994) and Director of the Studies Centre of FAUP (1990-1997) and from 1987 on became an effective member of the Scientific Board of FAUP. In November of 2006, he retired from the Faculty as Tenured Professor.

In the 1970s and 1980s he supervised the seminars of the International Course on Housing Planning and Building of Bowcentrum, Rotterdam (1977-1983), taught at the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Angola (1981), was invited by the State Academy of Fine Arts of Tbilisi, Georgia, to teach in the International Students Practical Seminar ("Artist and the City Environment" (1988) and participated in the Seminar "Design Management", organized by the University of Industrial Arts of Helsinki, Finland (1989).

In the 1990s, he participated in the "One Day Conference on Post Graduate Architectural Education, a Meeting for European Architectural School Representatives", at the Berlage Institute, in Amsterdam (1993), gave a course on Portuguese Contemporary Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of S. Paulo and gave conferences at the faculties of Architecture of the universities of Belém do Pará, Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro (1994); he also participated in the international Meeting "L'Architettura e il suo Insegnamento: Prospettive del Mestiere e della Scuola", organized by the Dipartimento di Projettazione dell' Architettura – Politecnico di Milano, led the Portuguese Delegation involved in the European Community programme -MED-CAMPUS-AMIE at the Architectuurinstituut, in Rotterdam (1995) and led a team at the Architecture Workshop Citemor 96, Montemor-o-Velho (1996).

From 1997 to 2005, he was responsible for the chair Project I, of the Architecture course of the University of Minho.
At the turn of the century, he led a team that participated in the International Architecture Workshop "Coimbra: Um Novo Mapa" (2000), was part of the jury for the Upgrading Project of Sofia Street, in Coimbra (2003), participated in the 1st Forum on Ugliness, Diputación de Ourense (2004), led the North team involved in the Survey on Portuguese Architecture of the 20th century, 2004/2005, sponsored by the Association of Architects, participated in the Congress on Historical Theatres, in Póvoa de Lanhoso (2005), gave an Architecture course (2005) at the ISTHMUS University, in Panama City, and chaired the Jury of the Secil Architecture Award 2005/2006.

Throughout his career, he collaborated with masters Viana de Lima and Arménio Losa. He has worked alone in and in co-authorship with Pedro Ramalho Alexandre Alves da Costa and José Luís Gomes in the workshop "Atelier15, Arquitectura Lda".

His vast award-winning and published work includes the Residential Buildings of Pasteleira, Porto (1965), a co-project with Pedro Ramalho, the House of Caminha or Alcina House (1971-1973), Operation SAAL in Bairro Leal, in Musas Streets, Porto (1974-1978), the Tourist Complex of Moledo (1980), the Kindergarten of Moledo (1988), the Students’ Residence Halls in Lisbon, Expo'98 (1996-1998); and the co-works with Alves Costa, for example the study to value and restore the heritage of Idanha-a-Velha village (in the last 15 years), the restoration of Cine-Teatro Constantino Nery in Matosinhos (inaugurated in 2008), the Residential Complex of Viana do Castelo (2005) and the intervention works in Santa Clara-a-Velha Convent, in Coimbra (inaugurated in 2009).

Sérgio Fernandez has also written many articles published in Portuguese and foreign books ("Architectures à Porto", "Tendenze dell' Architettura Contemporânea", "Casabella", "Lotus International", "Wonen Tabk" e "Electa") and the book "Percurso da Arquitectura Portuguesa 1930-1974", published by FAUP in 1985. He is the co-author of "Pedro Ramalho: projectos e obras de 1963-1995", published in 1995 by the Association of Portuguese Architects, North Regional Council.

On 22 October 2008/2009, he inaugurated the academic year at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto with a conference given in the auditorium Fernando Távora.
In March 2009, he received the AICA 2008 Award (International Association of Art Critics/Ministry of Culture), in the Architecture category, together with Alexandre Alves Costa (1939-), for the quality of his interventions in built heritage and new projects, as well as for the excellence of their teaching activity at FAUP. Around the same time, Fernandez attended the public presentation of the work "Só nós e Santa Tecla", on the House of Caminha, which he had designed in the 1970s, held at the Passos Manuel Cinema, no Porto.
