The enlargement scheme of the Parish Church of
Valbom - Gondomar, resulted from quite evident local constraints and from a certain desire to integrate the churchyard, which precedes it and serves as the only access, more markedly in the public space.
In fact, the Church is surrounded to the east, south and west by the cemetery and therefore its growth in those directions is not viable.
The proposed arrangement for the churchyard, while safeguarding vehicle access to the cemetery gates, unambiguously defines the path for the Church's new entrance. This path, marked by flights of stairs and wide landings, going down towards the main door, creates a space of seclusion and intimacy that did not exist until now, and where people can find time for rest and reflection, for meeting, for conviviality.
The church is significantly enlarged.

The amphitheater configuration of the nave makes the space converge towards the altar and improves the assistance conditions to the acts of worship. (...)
Discreet openings provide natural light, in order to prevent dazzling the faithful, making it difficult for them to see the altar. On the contrary, a wide opening in the ceiling will make an intense light fall on it, making it stand out in the vast space of the nave.
The very sober interior finishes (white walls, waxed wood ceilings and floors) will help to achieve a peaceful atmosphere.

This criterion of respect for elements of connection with a past, to which the people are generally sensitive, also led us, from the beginning of this study, to look for an apparent exterior volume that would not radically alter the profile and image that for many years the Church of Valbom offers from the top of its viewpoint, overlooking the Douro river. Moreover, this would also represent the preservation of an image that is dear to us.
It can therefore be said that the adopted solution was somewhat humbling, given what already exists.José Carlos Loureiro
