Pedro Ramalho

Pedro Cândido Almeida de Eça Ramalho was born in Caminha on 16 June 1937.

He graduated from the Porto School of Fine Arts, n 1968, where he taught between 1968 and 1984. In 1985 he moved to the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, from which he retired as Associate Professor.

He began working as a liberal architect in 1962, working for the city councils of Porto, Matosinhos, Guimarães and Águeda, and for Fomento da Habitação [housing initiatives], for the National Housing Institute and for the universities of Porto and Aveiro.

In the 80's, he was a member of the Sub-Committee on Fire Safety Regulations of the Board of Public Works and Transports (1980-1989), representing FAUP.

The architect, trained in the "School of Porto", is the author of texts on Housing, Equipment and Urban Development. His architecture is influenced by the models of the great masters of the modern movement, showing his concern for the construction details and the suitability of the construction to the site.

His work consists mostly of projects for collective housing facilities, for example the various blocks he designed for Pasteleira, Porto, with Sérgio Fernandez (1964-1973), the SAAL project, in Antas, Porto (1974-1976) and the housing complex for the cooperative "As Sete Bicas", Matosinhos (1987-1994).

He developed several facilities projects, such as the Museum and Auditorium in D. Hugo Street, Porto (1974-1978), the swimming-pools in Matosinhos (1975-1979), the new premises of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (1988-1994), and the refurbishment of the Rivoli Theatre, in Porto (1992-1997), which earned him the João de Almada Award, and for the Recovery of Architectural Heritage of the City of Porto in 2000.

He participated in several exhibitions, such as Onze Arquitectos do Porto [Eleven Architects of Porto] and received prizes in various architecture competitions (AAP, INH, International Association of Art Critics and Porto City Council).

At the same time as he worked in architecture and teaching, he was also dedicated to designing furniture, drawing, serigraphy and writing.

Between 2008 and 2009, he was the commissioner for the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the birth of architect Arménio Losa (1908-2008).
